Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a face cord?

A. A face cord is firewood split and stacked that fills an area of 4 feet by 8 feet by 16-17 inches deep. Firewood in upstate NY is sold in face cords. A full cord is 3 face cords, 4 feet by 8 feet by 4 feet deep.

Q. How long should wood season?

A. Ideally, wood should season for a full year. However, seasoning wood over at least one full summer is sufficient.

Q. What is the best wood to burn?

A. Hardwoods, such as Maple, Ash, Oak, Hickory, Beech and Cherry, are the best to burn.

Q. Where should firewood be stored?

A. An ideal location is the garage, where it will stay dry. Outside is fine, but it should be covered. Most people if they have room store it in a garage.

Q. Do you comply with the NY Department of Environmental Conservation's May 21, 2008 Emergency Regulation prohibiting the importation of untreated firewood into New York State and restricting the movement of untreated firewood within New York State?

A. Yes. The regulation limits the movement of firewood to a 50-mile radius within New York State, and we always use firewood from within this local area. More information about the regulation can be found here: www.dec.ny.gov/animals/28722.html.

This is just another reason why firewood is an environmentally-friendly choice for home heating -- all of the firewood is from this local area, so it doesn't have to travel many miles from its source to your home.
